Sand Island Recreation Area

Easy but interesting short hike featuring Petroglyphs, Puebloan rock art

Description

Edit Edit
Easy but interesting short hike of just over 1.3 miles and most of it is flat. ✍🏽There are two areas to see these panels. And a little bit of overgrown trees and grass but well worth it if you love Petroglyphs. ⭐️The Sand Island Petroglyphs Panel features Native American rock art that reflects centuries of human habitation in the Four Corners region. The petroglyphs, ranging from 300 to 3,000 years old, showcase designs from the early Basketmaker period to the Pueblo III period (AD 1150 to 1350), along with more recent contributions from the Ute and Navajo tribes. This site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is regarded as a premier example of accessible Puebloan rock art. The motifs include human figures, animals, geometric patterns, handprints, and various Kokopelli figures. ✨Why not add this onto other hikes in the area like ✅Bluff Canyon Trail ✅Wolfman Panel Trail ✅Lower Fish Creek Canyon ( we loved this one- no one on the trail with us) ✅Split Level ✅Double Stack ✅Cold Spring Cave ✅Procession Panel ✅Monarch Cave via Comb Ridge
